We are lighting up the city blue to end diabetes stigma

The theme for this year’s National Diabetes Week (July 11 to 17)  is Heads Up on Diabetes and Stigma. We are inviting you to join us to tackle diabetes-related stigma and put an end to diabetes blame and shame. More than 80% of people with diabetes report being judged, shamed or blamed for living with a serious health condition. Adding to that, more than 25% of people say attitudes and stereotypes about diabetes have negatively impacted their mental health.

To raise awareness about this important issue and mark National Diabetes Week, we are lighting up iconic sights across Hobart and Launceston blue, the international colour for diabetes. Check out the buildings below:

Diabetes Tasmania votes yes to unify with Diabetes Australia
On July 27, members of Diabetes Tasmania voted overwhelmingly in favour of unifying with Diabetes Australia to create a stronger voice for people living with diabetes. This vote followed the footsteps of Diabetes NSW & ACT and Diabetes Queensland who had already voted and unified with Diabetes Australia in late April 2021. Joining the group is now also two national diabetes Health Professional Organisations (the Australian Diabetes Society and Australian Diabetes Educators Association) who held their vote and unified with Diabetes Australia on August 12.
